Max Madof and Levi Leibman

Emery/Weiner School eighth graders Max Madof and Levi Leibman (pictured, from left) took third place in Embedded Systems at the Texas Science and Engineering Fair (TXSEF) state-level science fair. Each year, Emery/Weiner has a middle-school science fair competition, and all honors-level science students are asked to participate. This year, Max and Levi were interested in learning more about microplastic pollution in the world’s oceans. They created an entry for competition titled “A temporally calibrated infrared thermometric method for detecting ocean-surface microplastics” that studies ways to use infrared technology to identify areas where microplastics are accumulating. Their experiment won first place at the school competition and second place at the city competition. Their impressive finish at the city level qualified them to compete in the state competition where they came in third place in the Embedded Systems category. Smart boys!
